Hey FFFers! The Blog Tour for the anthology, Encircled, stops here today with a Visual Tour for JM Hackman’s story, The Songbird’s Citadel.

FFF: Welcome, Jill! First, let me say the cover for this anthology is beautiful! Congrats!

JMH: Thanks, Pam! I love it, too.

FFF: A visual tour … I’ve not done one of those before, so I’m excited to be hosting it! I’ll turn it over to Jill now.

JMH: Okay, let’s start.

“The Songbird’s Citadel” is a retelling of “The Nightingale” by Hans Christian Andersen. Since it’s a lesser known fairy tale, I had to familiarize myself with the story before attempting a retelling. When I write, characters, setting, and dialogue unspool in my head, much like a movie. The following images helped this science fantasy come alive.

Darianna and West are the two main characters. Despite a somewhat rocky start, these teens will need to rely on each other if they’re going to survive.

Rez, Darianna’s neighbor, and Princess Jerissa Jastin each cause their own brand of trouble for Darianna and West.

Durrel are a common food source for those that hunt, and the pelts are in high demand in the city. Darianna and her father often hunt the animals when the durrel population overruns the surrounding forests.

Aside from having a beautiful singing voice, Darianna also can throw knives. A hobby as well as a form of self-defense, the skill makes her feel a bit safer. She’s always wanted a key dagger, which is a weapon and a key, all in one blade. The ones made of rock-glass are handy, beautiful, and virtually indestructible—and way out of her budget.

The Songbird’s Citadel is an amazing set of mirrored rooms, a gift from Princess Jerissa. Its awesome visions, colored lights, and beautiful music dazzle the guests.
