The Things People Say - part six
10/10/2012 5:35:53 AM by: pam

"God Will Never Give You More Than You Can Handle"

Really? Then why do I spend a good bit of time with my face planted in the living room rug, crying my eyes out? Why have I banged my head in frustration against the wall? Or lifted my hands to the heavens and screamed? This is a total misinterpretation of Scripture. The actual verse is 1 Corinthians 10:13 which says,

“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”

Besides the fact this verse is talking about temptation and not difficult situations, if I could handle everything, I would have no need for God. Being Anna’s mommy is more than I can handle on my own, but with God’s strength and help, I get through it.

Again, if only someone would say, “Wow, that must be hard some days. How do you do it?” Not only does this acknowledge my struggle, it also gives me the opportunity to praise God. Yes, God has given me Anna, but He doesn’t leave me alone to handle it. I couldn’t do it at all if He were not a present help.

Thanks, Donna. And remember, it doesn't matter the source ... the emotions are still the same.

I hope you have some inkling of what a blessing your posts are to parents like me who have even a semi-special needs child. I have nowhere near the challenges you have, but some days I want to cry or scream or whatever. Please continue sharing. Your insights are spot on.

I agree, Susan. God does give us more than we can handle to increase our dependence on Him. Not because He's cruel, but to make us aware of His great love for us. We can't build muscles without lifting weights, right? Our faith can't increase unless we have troubles that God supports us through.

I'm so glad you debunked that phrase. I think sometimes God does give us more than we can handle so we are forced to depend upon Him and not ourselves (which is our sin nature at it's finest/worst). Job was a prime example. Blessings to you!
